2007 Indian Wells champion Rafael Nadal (pictured left, click for larger) started the tournament well, beating Colombia's Santiago Giraldo in straight sets to advance to the third round. The weather condition was really awful in such a windy day. Nadal hit only two winners and made 22
unforced errors, while Giraldo hit 9 winners and 39 unforced errors. In the third round, Nadal faces America's Donald Young (pictured right, click for larger). Young beat Dubai runner-up Feliciano Lopez in three sets. The court's slow speed might not have helped Lopez much, but for Young, it's s first third round in a Masters Series and a good win over a higher-ranked player who had been in good form.
Last year's runner-up Novak Djokovic (pictured left, click for larger) also had a good start and beat Italy's Andreas Seppi in straight sets, despite that Djokovic served for the match twice in the second set and needed to go to a tiebreak to close it out. Djokovic faces Philip Kohlschreiber. Kohlschreiber needed three sets to beat Xavier Malisse, but could have closed it in two sets if it wasn't for his poor break points conversion: 3/13. Malisse's wasn't any better, with 1/5.
two easy sets. It was a good win for Ferrer, considering he had a hard time to beat Rochus in Dubai a week ago. Ferrer now faces Hyung-Taik Lee (pictured right, click for larger) in the third round. Lee beat Jarkko Nieminen in three boring sets, with lots of missed opportunities for both players. Some interesting stats of this match: 13 service breaks, 9 aces and 12 double faults counting both players. Nieminen almost won the match despite only winning 50% of the points when he served and even got to serve for the match at 5-4 in the second set.
Richard Gasquet beat Robin Soderling in a routine straight-sets match. Gasquet wasn't a favorite to win the match because Soderling was coming from two finals in a row and Gasquet himself wasn't having quite a good year. The Frenchman won 90% of his first serve points and now faces last year's quarterfinalist Juan Ignacio Chela (pictured left, click for larger), who survived a 2 hour, 41 minute battle against Dmitry Tursunov. Tursunov served for the match at 5-4 in the second set, but ultimately lost it in a tiebreak after having a match point in the tiebreak. He didn't convert and lost the set and the match. It was an awful serve performance by both players: 10 double faults for Chela and 6 for Tursunov. Perhaps the difficult windy conditions were to blame for all of the double faults the players hit yesterday.
James Blake served for the match twice in the second set at 5-4 and 6-5 against Marc Gicquel; he even hit a double fault at match point. He ended up needing to play three sets to advance to the third round. He now faces Carlos Moya (pictured left, click for larger), who took his opportunities against Robby Ginepri. Moya hit 10 double faults in the match, but managed to save 20 out of 22 break points to win in three sets. Moya saved 12 break point in the third set alone, including two from 0-40.
three sets. Both players have been playing badly lately. Wawrinka served for the second set at 5-3 but couldn't close it out. Berdych had his chance to close the match at 6-5 but couldn't make it either. They went to a tie break and Wawrinka ended up winning it and saving a break point when was serving for the match at 5-4 in the third to advance to the third round. In the third round, he faces Marcos Baghdatis, who had a hard time against Wayne Odesnik, winning in three sets. Baghdatis was a break down in both sets he won, and needed 2 hours and 40 minutes to advance to the next round.
Paul-Henri Mathieu beat Fabio Fognini in straight sets. Mathieu lead the tie break 5-2 but had to save a set point at 5-6 in Fognini's serve to win it. He faces 2008 Australian Open runner-up Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (pictured left, click for larger) in the third round in an all French battle. Tsonga beat Dudi Sela in straight sets. It was the Frenchman's first match since Marseille a few weeks ago. After winning the first setGuillermo Canas was down 1-4 in the second set against Jonas Bjorkman. He had some match points when serving for the match at 5-4, but couldn't hold; luckily for him, he ultimately won the match in a tiebreak. He now faces Juan Monaco, who beat Robin Haase in straight sets.
